Cayuga Lake Visual Tour

This visual tour starts at Hibiscus Harbor in Union Springs, NY and circles Cayuga Lake. The Kopasetic heads north to the top of the lake, heads south along the west side to Ithaca, and returns to Hibiscus Harbor north along the east side.  Each photograph and map location shows an interest point or attraction on Cayuga Lake as we cruise down the sides of the lake.

Cruising Guide Map: CS-12B As you leave Hibiscus Harbor's small entrance you should take a look over your shoulder when you get out on the lake.  Their entrance can be real hard to find, even in daylight. The next two shots give you different views from out in the Cayuga lake. Click here for a map of the harbor.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-12B I've become accustomed to spotting the house on the right of he channel entrance.  You should also note the location relative to the tip of Hibiscus Point, as shown in the map and image below.

MAP N/A
Cruising Guide Map: CS-12B Troy's Marina & Campground - Finding the entrance to Troy's can be as difficult as the one to Hibiscus Harbor; fortunately they are fairly close to each other.  I've driven in Troy's mistaking it for Hibiscus Harbor in the early days of Cayuga Lake boating!
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11B Harris Park is lakeside in the town of Cayuga, NY.  It is a nice municipal park.  Unfortunately, there is no place to dock, as the water is too shallow and docking is restricted.
Captain's Note: I am trying to find out if the town ever plans to allow docking and if they will dredge the area deep enough for larger boats.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A After you pass Harris Park you will pass under Rail Road Bridge S-2 as you approach the north end of Cayuga Lake.  Beyond it is Beacon Bay Marina and you are a short way from the Cayuga-Seneca Canal.  Although it is not speed limit posted, I try to keep it slow because many people fish from the base of the bridge, and you need to share this space with other boats.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   As you pass under the railroad bridge, a look to starboard for Beacon Bay Marina. They do not have fuel, but there is some ahead before you get on the canal system.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   As you approach the intersection buoy RG"CS", you will see Lockview Marina off to starboard. There is no fuel at this marina as well, and you should watch your wake since the tip of the lake narrows a lot with shallows to your port.
MAP PICTURE
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   Cayuga Marina and Campground is just north and adjacent to the Lockview Marina.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   If you continue north to the tip of Cayuga Lake you reach the Cayuga-Seneca Canal and Lock CS1.  If you head to port from this position you can travel the Cayuga-Seneca Canal to Seneca Lake.  Take our Visual Tour of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal or our Visual Tour of Seneca Lake for details.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   Now we turn around and head south under the railroad bridge to cruise the west coast of Cayuga Lake.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   Approximately 1.5 miles southwest of the railroad bridge we reach the Deerhead Inn.  Docking is limited to a private dock that may be used by renters so you should call ahead to make sure there is space available.

Captains Note: I'm not sure if the tent you see in the image above serves as a landmark each season - I need to check that with the owner.

Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   Just south of the Deerhead Inn we reach Cayuga Lake State Park.  The image above is the ranger station and public boat launch at the north end of the park.
I
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   The image on the left is a closer shot of the boat launch, and the image on the right is the main lakeside lodge. You can overnight here, but docking is limited (and shallow), so it pays to call ahead.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-11A   On the left is a shot approaching the docking area, and on the right is a shot of the pier where you can dock.  Bigger boats better trim up your props, because it is shallow and not dredged.  I kicked up some sand on my approach to the "deeper" end of the dockage.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-12A (not shown in guide)   The Red Jacket Yacht Club is the next landmark you pass on your cruise south.  It is a private club and not docking is available for non-members.  Remember though, in an emergency such as a lightening storm or mechanical failure, no one will turn you away.

Captain's Note: The exact location of the Red Jacket buildings on shore is approximate.

Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A   Lakeshore Winery is the first vineyard with a boaters dock that you reach heading south.  Keep a sharp lookout for the sign on their dock as it's easy to pass by.  And beware that the dock is in shallow waters - trim the engines up or you make churn up some lake bottom.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A  The pictures above are taken off the shore from the Lakeshore Winery.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A  Knapp Vineyard is about a mile south or Lakeshore Winery.  If you call well ahead of time to ask permission, you can request dockage at their private cottage. If the cottage is not rented at the time, the Knapp personnel will come and pick you up to transport you to the vineyard which is a couple miles west of the dock.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A The pictures above are from the Knapp Vineyard web site.
Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A Goosewatch Winery
Cruising Guide Map: CS-13A Goosewatch has a tasting hut on the shore of the lake (seen on the far left of the image on the right) which is a neat addition but I've never seen it open in about 10 visits.  Regardless it makes a great place to sit and enjoy the views.
