Ships Blog Ratings
Guide

We use a simple system of five stars to describe our
experiences with all aspects of the NYS Canal System, be it a town,
marina, winery, restaurant or recreational facility.
These ratings are for boaters! If you can't
dock anywhere near a particular port of call, it will never rate above
fair,
regardless of an exceptional experience by land. Things to note about our
ratings and our disclaimer:
 | These ratings take into consideration ease of access
from the NYS Canal System. |
 | While some reviews use the price per volume as an
indicator of a good time - we do not. We would rather have a small
quantity of excellent food, than a large plate of mediocre food. |
 | Most importantly - these reviews are our personal
opinion based on our personal experiences! You may find
varying results, so by all means,
please let us know! |

In our detailed reviews we rate the individual aspects
of a port of call using the same 1-5 system, but we also provide an
overall rating using the following system:
 |

Excellent - A port of call with excellent dockage, goods, services,
and facilities. For example, you can dock with ease and there's
dock attendants, superior food and service at a nearby restaurant, and
plenty of excellent boating amenities. |
 |

Great - A port of call with a
combination of great dockage, goods, services, and facilities. For example, if we can dock easily, walk a short
distance in beautiful surroundings to enjoy great food and service, a
restaurant or winery would rate four anchors. |
 |

Good - A port of call with a combination of services that make
your visit pleasant, but not great. An attraction with a good
rating isn't bad by any means, but it just doesn't
make us want to go out or our way to visit. However, depending on your
location, good ports of call may be your best choice for spots to visit
in less traveled territory. |
 |

Fair - A port of call that's only
worth it when there just isn't any other game in town. Usually
these ports have limited or distant docking, limited facilities, and do not cater
to boaters. While we would not go
to these sites and avoid them on a planned voyage, if you need fuel or
service, you may no other choice. |
 |
Poor - A port of call that
provides no docking or only private docking. Characterized as "emergency
use only", as in your boat is floundering and you need to get to land.
Or you are starving and the worst hot dog in your life will taste
"great"! |
