Sheldrake, NY
Boater Rating:
We have lived in Sheldrake for about five years and our home is on County Road 153 that runs along the west side of Cayuga Lake. It is a favorite spot for vehicular tourists and pedestrians alike. While Sheldrake isn't so much a town as a location on the map, I understand from the history of the area that Sheldrake was once a popular vacation spot for New Yorkers and a ferry ran across the lake here. A large hotel once occupied a spot near the Sheldrake Vineyard. Docking For boaters, unfortunately there is no place to dock except a small dock associated with the Sheldrake Vineyard. But to enjoy the nice walk along County Road 153 you will have to drive and park on land. Recommendations to the Town There may be more of an influx of tourists as Kidders Landing re-opens two restaurants in 2003 and after speaking with the owner of the new Lighthouse Restaurant. Another suggestion that would help clean up the Sheldrake Corners area over time would be a boat landing where the ferry once ran. Fisherman and small boaters can put in at the existing "launch", but is not maintained and inaccessible by boaters from the lake.
