A great overview book with background history and photos of the canal. Associated with the PBS series "Cruising America's Waterways". Not meant for navigation, but it makes a great addition for exploring places of interest.

A straightforward record of the author's journey around the "the great circle". More of a ships log than an information resource, but great reading if you want to know what doing the loop entails.
A Long Haul Author: Michelle A. McFee Boater Rating:
"The Story of the New York State Barge Canal". This is one of my favorites although I confess I haven't read many of the books. The author includes several great pictures (b&w) and a well rounded historical account of the NYS Canal. A great first book for those interested in the canal's history.
Erie Canal Legacy Authors: Andy Olenick and Richard O. Reisem Boater Rating:
A beautiful coffee table book dedicated to the architectural legacy surrounding the Erie Canal and it's neighboring cities and towns.
